CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The barmaid approached with his drink.

Yarlyn Kontar slumped into a seat at The Drawn Bow. He felt exhausted. The last few days had been incredibly tiring. He drank down his first drink in one go, then waved the young barmaid off to fetch him another.

Saralon was still away and Yarlyn didn't know if Kros would show up tonight, so he was drinking alone unless Jalesia turned up. The pretty teenage barmaid quickly placed another drink in front of him, and he held up his hand to stop her. She turned to face him, her young attractive face shining through Yarlyn's bad mood. He downed his new drink, and placed a copper into the young girl's hand. She smiled and scooped up the empty glass, retreating back to the bar to refill the drink. The girl knew that Yarlyn - known as Hawke here - had large credit at The Drawn Bow, so that any money she was given was a tip. The girl brought another clear drink to Yarlyn, curtsied, and left to remedy the other patrons' thirsts.

Yarlyn sipped his drink this time, brooding over the last few days once more. It had all started when he had begun to investigate the group Saralon had been searching for, the group that had escaped from Urgar Keep. King Rogor Trendrik had assigned Yarlyn to find out what was causing the Selection and have it stopped. Yarlyn had informed his spy network to investigate why Queen Kilandra of Cyermyth had sent her personal knights to Sarophia - in particular to find out why she hadn't informed him or King Rogor about their presence in the Kingdom.

Yarlyn hated being uninformed.

The following day three of his informants were found dead. Yarlyn suspected the Ruby Brotherhood was involved somehow, which added to his assumption that the Brotherhood of Assassins was involved with the Selection.

Since then four more of Yarlyn's spy network had been found dead. He could tell he was getting closer to piecing together the puzzle of the Selection.

Yarlyn sat back in his chair and again sipped at his clear drink. What did he know? It had started over a year and a half ago, mainly in the smaller towns and villages like Vemmlok and Lotheric. It was mainly the youth that was going missing, and there was no pattern that he could work out. There was an increased sighting of prison wagons, however they appeared to be bypassing Urgar Keep. He counted on his fingers - one, he must work out where the wheeled cages were going. The latest out-of-the-way sighting was near Kutporn. The City of Thieves, he thought. He had abundant contacts there.

What else had he discovered? Queen Kilandra. What part did she play in this? Cyermyth was a long way away - what interest did she have in this part of Palandra? And her knights taking over the offices of Urgar Keep...Yarlyn counted on his next finger - two, what are Queen Kilandra's Personal Guards doing here?

Yarlyn's thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice.
